BEACH BIRD NESTING UPDATE
Sea Bright Update 6/15
What an exciting time for Sea Bright’s Piping Plovers! Ten of the eleven nests have hatched and eight of those pairs currently have chicks! In total, there are 26 chicks between Sea Bright South & Sea Bright North. Chicks take approximately 25 days to reach fledge. The chicks will wander from the fenced areas in search of food and shelter and the adults will remain with them for protection from predators. Because of their small size, chicks are readily lost to a suite of predators. If you happen to see chicks out on the beach, please keep your distance as the adults view you as a predator and will try to distract you from the chicks. This behavior leaves chicks susceptible to real predators.
