BEACH NESTING BIRDS UPDATE
Sea Bright Update 7/27
Sea Bright’s Piping Plovers have had another banner year! A total of 11 pairs fledged 21 chicks this year. Sea Bright remains a bright spot in an otherwise sad tale of Piping Plovers here in New Jersey. While final numbers remain on hold as other sites continue to finish, the state has assuredly dropped in pair numbers again this year.
The fencing at Sea Bright will remain up as the Least Terns continue to raise their young. This week the count was down a bit, but the terns were at least somewhat successful this year. In total, 48 adults were noted this week, 2 chicks and 11 fledglings. As the terns begin to wrap up, more of the fenced areas will be reconfigured to accommodate a federally endangered Sea Beach Amaranth.
We whole-heartily appreciate the patience, cooperation, and understanding of Sea Bright’s residents. Sea Bright should be proud that they helped their birds accomplish a true feat this season!
